Groom traditionally may not see the bride in the _finished_ wedding dress before the ceremony.
I'm not sure where this comes from; if I had to guess, I'd guess the idea is that the groom will become inflamed by lustful passion because the dress is so beautiful, or something like that. Anyway, a traditional way to circumvent this tradition -- what we in the computer biz call a "workaround" -- is to leave a single pin somewhere in the wedding dress at all times until immediately before the ceremony.
A dress with a pin in it anywhere can always be considered to be unfinished. A related superstition is that it's unlucky to finish the dress before the wedding day. I've always suspected that this particular one was started by a seamstress: "Oh, don't worry, dearie, it'll be finished on time; besides, it's bad luck to finish it early!" Anybody have any more strange wedding superstitions?
